Sisterlocks

Hair blues: the workout

I was invited to go cross training today but turned it down because today is Tuesday and I just washed my hair and don’t feel like being bothered with washing it until Friday.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my hair lately and how much time I spend on it when I do put effort in how it looks and I how it doesn’t seem like I do anything to it when I do spend time on it.  The only thing stopping me from getting Sisterlocks is not having seen them on someone in person. I have the money but when it comes to doing something more permanent with my hair, I want to ensure it’s really what I want.

So if anybody with Sisterlocks is reading this, and you live in Southern California, and some skinny chick runs up to your asking you a million questions about your hair, don’t beat her down with your purse or whatever you happen to have in your hand. It’s just me and I want to get a good look at your hair.

I really should have gone to workout tonight. I just need to do it. Both of them. The hair and the workout.

Hair blues

I hate the process I have to go through after washing my hair. Nothing sends me into a hair funk like having to blow dry my hair and then flat ironing it. I just want to let my hair be.

I’ve been thinking a lot about Sisterlocks lately, mostly because I’m tired of my hair and can’t figure out what to do with it. I think I need to make an appointment with a consultant to see if Sisterlocks are the way to go. I would love to do more living and less worrying about my hair.

I need to get some sleep. I have to get up early for Toastmasters and then I’ll have a very long day. I’m planning on meeting some folks from one of my meetup groups and hanging out in LA. Gotta love how I have to travel so far for a social life but folks up here aren’t trying to do anything fun.

Locking hair: Sisterlocks vs Nappylocs

page_1140In my search for more information about Sisterlocks, I’ve learned a lot about the process and what to ask when you meet with a consultant.

I think I probably feel like a lot of people when I voice my frustration about the secrecy behind the patterns. Just because I know how to do something doesn’t mean I’m willing to do it myself. I know how to change the oil in my truck and custom frame a picture, but that doesn’t mean I want to do it. I’m willing to pay someone else to do the things I don’t want to spend my time doing but apparently if people know what it is the consultant is doing to their hair, people won’t want to pay a consultant. Whatever. It’s only bad business if the consultant doesn’t know what he/she’s doing and he/she’s screwing somebody’s hair up out of ignorance or laziness.

I want to know as much as I can about what’s being done to my hair so that if someone tells me 3 inches of the end of my hair will be left out of the pattern, I’ll know to tell that person to stop being lazy and lock the whole length.

I purchased the Nappylocs business in a box and started reading the booklet. The Nappylocs booklet describes several different patterns that can be used to lock one’s hair: 8, 6, 5, 3, and 2-point patterns. Now the book doesn’t say which pattern works best on which hair types but my guess is the looser the curl pattern, the tighter or more turns you want (8 or 6 pt).

Cornrows and Sisterlocks

page_1134

I just wanted to blog about a hair emergency. I just read on Brunsli’s blog about the dangers of cornrolling Sisterlocks and lock loss. You can read about it here.

I’ve always been curious about cornrolling Sisterlocks. I know what the stress of wearing braids can do to one’s hairline, and I automatically assumed doing a whole lot of braiding (especially cornrolling) can’t be good for Sisterlocks.

I don’t think cornrows are good for loose, chemical-free hair with how tightly most folks braid hair. I hate getting my hair braided.

Anyway, I just wanted to blog a little bit about the issue and send you to Brunsli’s blog so you can ask her all kinds of questions.

Enough about hair.

I’ve seeing a lot of women around me struggle with working and motherhood. Why would you attempt to do both if you don’t have to? I guess that’s one reason why I won’t have children. I don’t want to be a working mom. I don’t want to juggle both. I know a lot of women who do who don’t have to and I shake my head. I actually want to smack them but shake my head instead because that’s the more kosher thing to do.

If I were married and my husband said i could stay home with my babies, I’d be so long gone from the job. But I won’t ever marry so i don’t have to worry about that scenario.

25 things about me

page_1133

A cousin tagged me so I’m posting 25 things about myself. I’m supposed to post the rules and tag a couple of folks but that’s just not my thing. If you want to try this then go ahead and try it.

  1. I think I have a great buttom and wish I had eyes in the back of my head so I can get a better look at it in a mirror.
  2. I’ve been celibate for almost 5 years (6 years if you count that time I wasn’t there mentally).
  3. I don’t have a favorite color.
  4. I’m terrified of becoming overweight and weigh myself almost everyday to ensure I stay within my ideal weight.
  5. I can’t seem to maintain relationships because I value my “me time” too much.
  6. I’m attracted to younger men. I think the Jonas brothers are hot!!! I would get excited when their Target commercial came on tv. <?> I don’t know why you say good buy. I say hello. Hello! Hello! <?>
  7. I started writing a book during January National Novel Writing Month 2006 about a women who was being stalked by a man who burglarized her home. I stopped because the story shifted from her to him and his character was too scary for me to continue. I got about about 7,000/50,000 words done.
  8. I considered becoming Mormon or Jewish. I think Mormons are charming and Jews are mysterious.
  9. I want to join a nudist colony. I hate wearing clothes.
  10. I feel lonelier when I’m with a group of people than when I’m by myself.
  11. I want to be a screenwriter.
  12. I hate it when people imbed music on their blogs. I have my own playlist I like to listen to when I surf the blogosphere. I don’t want to listen to yours!
  13. I love to read. I especially like to read How-to books.
  14. I’m seriously considering Sisterlocks for my hair. I feel it’s time to style my hair in a way that’s complimentary to my natural hair texture. I’m tired of fighting what God has given me.
  15. I find the word ‘nappy’ unbelievably offensive and don’t understand why black folks use the word to describe their hair. Please tell me it’s not the new term of endearment for black hair.
  16. I recently joined Meetup.com. I’m hoping to meet some single people (without children) to hang out with in the Antelope Valley.
  17. I have the soul of a 500-pound woman. I love food. I don’t really like cooking but I definitely like eating.
  18. I was devastated when I found out corned beef and cabbage wasn’t soul food.  Who knew it was an Irish dish! Do they eat it with corn bread, too?
  19. I think sharing 25 things about myself is a little excessive. Why not just 5 or 10? Who ever came up with this social tag must have been really bored.
  20. I don’t like shaving so I opted to get my underarms and my bush lasered off.
  21. I had a really big crush on Matthew McConaughey. I think he has the most perfect arms, legs, and chest. Who cares if he has bad body odor! That’s what baths are for, danggit!
  22. I think I’m the only person in my family who didn’t vote for Barack Obama. Sorry. I’m an independent and think McCain and Obama were two of the worst candidates for POTUS since Bush and Kerry! I don’t consider my vote wasted just because I used it on a third party candidate either. If Americans actually thought about the candidates they vote for we wouldn’t be in this mess to begin with. Damn @ssphants!
  23. I’ve celebrated my 23rd birthday several times and I plan to keep doing it.
  24. I’m tired of school and don’t plan to go back ever again.
  25. I don’t like being tagged.

Comments

page_1128

Not too long ago, I turned off the comments on my blog. It wasn’t like I was getting very many comments and I kind of like not knowing who’s reading my blog. Plus, with school, I really didn’t have time to respond to comments.   I’m going to try out comments again. Feel free to leave a comment or two or three.

Sorry if you came by my blog looking for more information about Sisterlocks. I don’t have Sisterlocks but I’m considering.

Just two more weekends and I’ll be able to do stuff on the weekends worth blogging about. Like discovering restaurants, getting out of the house, man hunting, etc. These last two weeks are going to be very difficult. I don’t want to write anymore papers or ready any chapters. I’m tired of reading academic stuff (unless it’s about money).

So you want to be a Sisterlocks Consultant?

shavonne-e280ba-blog-stats-e28094-wordpressTake the class, learn to do the technique the correct way, and then learn to advertise your services!!!!

Since I discovered Sisterlocks, I’ve been searching high and low for more information on the technique, more pictures, and more about consultants in my area (California). Sadly, California consultants aren’t really good at advertising their services. I’m not sure if it is because they already have a full clientele and aren’t taking anymore clients or because they live in the Stone Age and don’t know how great the Internet is for advertising.

I’ve only come across a few consultants with Web sites advertising services and displaying the finished product. That’s a good thing because the more information I can find, the more questions I’ll know to ask a consultant when the time comes for me to meet with one. I just wish there were more pictures of the installation process as I’m obsessive about the parting. I don’t like crooked lines! And if I’m going to do something so permanent to my hair, I want it done right the first time. Know what I mean?

I just wanted to share some stats from my blog (shavonne.org) on how many hits my blog gets from people looking for more information about Sisterlocks. Mind you, these stats are only from the end of October 2008 to present. I didn’t have stats installed before the last week of October 2008.

Anyway. It makes me happy to get visitors to my blog, but since I don’t have Sisterlocks nor am I aspiring to become a consultant, my blog is hardly the place for seeking information. But I’ll be more than happy to keep blogging about Sisterlocks and directing visitors to other sites much more worthy of the attention.

Devastating news

page_1115

I was completely and totally devastated when I learned Golden had taken out her Sisterlocks. She is was my lock idol.

For like 5 seconds, I wanted to conduct a witch hunt for the person responsible for influencing Golden to cut her luscious locks.  Then I came to my senses and realized that if my Lock Idol no longer had locks, then I could take her place.

Yes, I could have the most lavishly luscious locks to ever grace the blogosphere. If I ever got Sisterlocks.

I don’t know if I will ever take the plunge. I mean, if Golden could get tired of having low maintenance hair and go back to blow drying and straightening and avoiding humidity, would I ever do the same?

Last year, I wore my hair in a ponytail for 364 days. It could be 365 days but I’m giving myself some credit. I do recall wearing my hair partially down to work one day. And I probably took my hair out of the ponytail and let it hang loose. Oh, wait, I did attempt to wear my hair down on Thanksgiving, so that’s day two.

Happy New Year

page_1111

Happy New Year everyone. I hope this year is better than 2008. I have a lot of things to look forward to. Like finishing school in 5 weeks. Yay!

Is it bad luck to end 1 year with a cold and start a new year with one?

I have some things I want to accomplish this year.  I’d blog about them but I don’t like disclosing every detail about myself in my blog. I will take a break from blogging. I will post a few times a week.

Gosh, I seem to not have much to talk about.

I suppose after I finish school, I will start to look for a consultant for sisterlocks. I think I will get them. I think they will look nice on me. And I won’t have to avoid doing the things I like because of my fear of sweating out my hair or having to wash it. I want wash and go hair. Not wash and comb out, blow dry and flat iron.

I think I’m going to get some rest. I hate sitting at my computer. I won’t be blogging the next couple of days.

Day 328

Braiding and banding is already a part of my hair washing routine. I started doing this in college as I found it easier to comb out my hair after washing, which saved lots of time for studying.

From what I?ve read, Sisterlocks require braiding and banding before washing to prevent the locks from slipping (unraveling) during the washing process. I?m already starting with good habits.

Did I mention I sleep with my hair wrapped?

I don’t know how much longer it will be if I decide to get Sisterlocks as I still haven’t found any information on consultants in California. My number 1 choice is still Phyllis Johnson despite her living in Delaware and not being listed on the Sisterlocks Web site.

Can you imagine putting up to 16 inches of hair in the Sisterlock pattern? How long do you think that would take? 4 days?

I didn’t get much of a good night’s sleep last night. I had a dream about a war. It was a bad one, one that actually made it to American shores. My dream was nothing like Pearl Harbor or 9-11. Much, much worse and last night’s wasn’t the first time.

I also dreamed someone I know got back together with her ex-boyfriend. For some odd reason, I don’t think this conversation was a dream. I could be wrong. I will ask on Tuesday.

Day 316

I?ve been trying to figure out why my blog is getting so many views because of my posts about Sisterlocks. It turns out, I?ve been linked by discoveringhair.com. I don?t know why. Bloggers like Brunsli and others actually have Sisterlocks and do quite a bit of blogging about their hair.

I haven?t even been able to decide who I would like to do my hair! It?s slim pickings in California and my number 1 pick for a consultant lives in Delaware (I think).

I still have a while before I even start the process of locating a consultant.

Enough about hair.

I procrastinated like crazy today. The only thing I managed to do is get my homework done for the week.? I still have two papers I have to write and I didn?t even make a dent in either one. I could have done some research for one paper and filled in the tables for the other paper so that this weekend all I have to do is write the paper. But I didn?t.

I can?t blame my tv because I didn?t even bother to turn it on.

I blame the Internet. Let me explain why.

I discovered not too long ago that I could watch my favorite shows over the Internet. Who cares if I miss my shows during the week. I can play catch up on the weekends. I don?t usually play catch up on the weekends because I watch my shows during the week when they originally air.

Maybe I should blame my computer instead. Yeah, that?s it. I have to be on my computer in order to do my assignments, which means I eventually venture onto the Internet to do other things not related to school. Like blogging and reading blogs and sometimes commenting on blogs. Or shopping. Or like today, watching Samantha Who? because I didn?t see it last night because I was busy watching Heroes.

I discovered why I like the show Privileged. The main character, Megan, is an aspiring writer. I like stories about writers with writer?s block or excuses galore to keep from writing.

Just heard another news tease about California possibly getting a bailout. Urgh!!! I can see an increase in crime. I think I?m going to invest in a couple of safes so that if someone does try to break in a take the things I work hard for.? Even in your own home, you are not safe.

I need to get some shut eye.

Day 313

I finally ordered the clip art collection from Nova Development. I was surprised I got the 5-DVD disc edition as Apple.com advertised the product as having 49 CD-roms.

I?m happy I got the 5 DVD Roms because it means I can bring my clip art collection with me when I travel.

I installed a plugin that allows me to see the number of visitors who visit my blog on a daily basis. For the most part, people venture to my blog in their search for Sisterlocks.

I don?t even have Sisterlocks but I?ve been blogging about them because I?m considering them. I still have to wait a while before I get them. I?m waiting on a change in my living circumstances and I?m still searching for someone I can trust to install them.

It?s a shame more certified Sisterlock consultants do not have blogs or websites. I?ve only found a few who advertise and have online photo albums of their work. My number choice is Phyllis Johnson a.k.a. Videolocktician. She posted video of one of her clients and I was very impressed with Phyllis?s parting on ?Lisa?s? head. The only problem I have is Phyllis lives in Delaware or Connecticut (I can?t remember) so it would take careful planning for me to schedule a consultation/installation.

My second choice is Paulette Brown at Locks4Life. She lives in Michigan. I would have to see some more pictures of her work or the work of the other people in her salon. Having someone from Locks4Life would be more convenient for me because I have family in Michigan and I plan to make several trips to Michigan once I finish with school.

Money isn?t a factor for me because I consider this a lifetime commitment and I want it done right the first time.

I just bought Jon B.?s new cd Helpless Romantic. I like it but I have a tendency to like everything he does. I?m going to have to buy John Mayer?s cds soon because I really like his voice-it?s like his whispering in my ear. I shocked though when I saw what he looked like because his voice doesn?t match his look.

Well, I better get back to finishing my papers as I haven?t even started. I?m such a procrastinator.

I?m watching the Real Housewives of Atlanta. Oh my gosh. Talk about drama. It?s a much better show than the New York version. I think the women in the New York season didn?t really know each other like the women in Atlanta or Orange County.

Now, I really need to get my homework done. I want to have it turned it by midnight.

Day 258

Someone asked me what the difference is between Sisterlocks and Nappylocs. Well, I?m not an expert at either type of lock but I think the only difference between the two is the tool use to form the lock. Sisterlocks uses a crochet-like tool and the Nappyloc tool is hard to describe but it?s basically kind of like a big, dull needle with a very large loop.

Back to blogging.

I?ve decided I will no longer allow comments on my blog. It?s nice to get random comments here and there but I really don?t want to be bothered with Tyler Perry groupies and other people who feel like they know me well enough to tell me what I should be liking and how I should be living my life.

I?ve got some things I need to get done tomorrow, so off to bed I go.

Day 203

What a long day! All my days are long in the wrong way. I wish the workday was shorter and the rest of my day longer.

I’ve been meaning to write something on Sisterlocks and what peeked my interest about them. I received a scolding from someone not too long ago about my laughter at the way a commenter on my blog described the way a set of traditional locks felt like when she touched them. If you are that interested in what this person wrote, click on my Sisterlocks category (to the left) and read through the archives.

I never thought about locking my hair until I came across Sisterlocks. I had considered cutting off all my hair but never locking. The things I read to maintain traditional locks didn’t appeal to me because I don’t like putting products in my hair. So wax, honey, gel, etc., are things that I scream dirty in the sense that the tiniest of debris in the air would have something sticky to cling to and that is outright gross for my head. I haven’t used hair oil in my hair in years and I recently stopped using leave-in conditioner.

I bought some Curlicious hair shampoo and conditioner and leave-in condition and I thought the products were yucky in the sense that they smelled like coconut and milkshake, and when I wet my hair to wash using my regular shampoo/conditioner, my hair felt slimy.

I like the way Sisterlocks look because they are well groomed and also because they look more ‘Shavonne’ that other locks. In the end, it’s my hair and I don’t care how other people may love traditional or free-formed locks. I don’t care how other locks may feel and I don’t care how great other people look in them. Traditional is not for me.

Forgive me if there are grammar/spelling mistakes. I’m tired and don’t feel like editing anything when I get home from work.

Day 161

The uneventful days are becoming too plentiful. I got a lot done but yet I didn’t. I did two loads of laundry and I washed my hair and I finished the assignment that was due.

My back stopped hurting. I’m happy about that. Elevating my feet above my head helped a lot for some reason.

It’s getting too hot outside and in the house.

I spoke with my dad and he wants me to go to Florida for a family get together. I really don’t want to go. I have school and I don’t like not having access to the stuff that makes going to school easier, like my very own bed, big screen tv with surround sound, an unlimited supply of food, and nobody to bother me while I compose my academic masterpieces. Oh, I got another A. So far that makes five A’s and two -A’s.

I just finished watching the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I love this show. It is my favorite show of all time. I don’t know what it is about the show, but I always feel better after watching it.

I wish I have it in me to blog about the things I don’t blog about and I’m not talking about Thumb Twiddle either.

Day 160

There are only two times of the year that I really enjoy: spring and fall.
Springtime brings the flowers and warm weather. Fall, depending on where you live, brings the pretty reds, oranges, and golds from the change in color of the leaves. I don’t get to see the colors of Fall in California, especially in the desert.

I’m beginning to realize how much I hate summer. I used to like summer, but that was back when I was in grade school and we’d get three months off during the summer. Summer now means working, and sweating, and bad hair days. Urgh!
I feel so bummed about summer.

I’ve been watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer and in the first episode of the fourth season, Giles dates a woman who appears to have Sisterlocks!!! I’m going to admit, I’ve never seen Sisterlocks in person, so they could have very well been small locks. But I’m going to insist they were Sisterlocks because they were really small and bouncy and had the appearance that they were soft.

Sisterlocksmd
left a comment on my blogger blog explaining how Sisterlocks feel.

I know someone who has traditional locks and I touched her hair…it scared me to death! It was sooo hard…hard like a brillo pad mixed with concrete…not cute! – Sisterlocksmd

Ha! I got a good laugh out of that comment.

Day 148

Today is the start of my last week in class number 7. Next Tuesday I start class number 6. I can’t wait. I have a lot of reading to do for my next class. I think a total of 8 or 9 chapters to read for week 1. The class should be easy because it’s statistics. And no BENCHMARKING!

I already feel better.

About Memorial Day.

As I mentioned yesterday, the fam came out ad we had a blast. I sang Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Lionel Richie’s “Hello,” which are my standard routines for karaoke. I really have a much deeper appreciation for singers who get on a stage to sing and dance though I would rather they just sing. I was worn out by the second verse of “Thriller.”

I’ve been reading up on apple cider vinegar. It’s supposed to be an excellent hair rinse for conditioning and dry scalp. I’m going to try it out. I just hope my hair doesn’t smell, though the Web site said the smell would go away as the cider dries. I don’t plan on leaving it in my hair but ACV is supposed to be a good conditioner. I also bought some Tea Tree shampoo and conditioner because tea tree oil is supposed to be good for dry scalp, too. I don’t know what tea tree oil smells like but I hope it doesn’t smell mediciny. I don’t want to smell like I’ve been dipped in rubbing alcohol. If I like the way the shampoo smells, then I will try Dr. Bonner’s Tea Tree liquid soap.

Meetings. I hate them. I tend to leave meetings in a ticked-off mood. That’s all I’m going to say about that.

Another goal I have for myself besides finishing school and writing a couple of spec scripts, is to submit my resume to at least 5 different companies a week.

I think I saw a women with Sisterlocks. I was tempted to run her down and ask some questions. In the end, I just sat in my car watching her get into hers. She was a security guard and though she didn’t have a weapon of any sort, she was a big one and I didn’t want to mess with her.

Since I’m on the subject of Sisterlocks, I’ve become obsessed with the parting. I’ve seen some pictures of the grids on some heads and was completely horrified. If Creyole eventually experienced the effects of having parts that aren’t right, then I can only imagine what the other people are going to experience when they get a more courageous with their styling options.

My point is that when I do start interviewing locticians to install my locks, I want to see some picture, video, mannequin heads, etc of their parting technique. So far, I know for a fact that Phyllis Johnson (a.k.a., VideoLoctician) does a dang good job with the parting. Her parting is a vision of perfection and I would be so honored for her to bestow her magnificent gridlines on my head. But Phyllis lives in Delaware. Delaware!!

Day 143

Dear Carey almost kinda sorta practically had a fit because I didn’t write about Brunsli’s response to my questions in Day 137. Dear Carey, can’t read Brunsli’s blog because blogger blogs are blocked on work computers.

Well, Dear Carey, let me tell you about what Brunsli said about her hair. I asked Brunsli if her hair felt like yarn or fuzzy braids. Brunsli said her hair feels like yarn, not the cheap stuff but the good yarn like the soft yarn Sandra buys for many of her knitting projects. So, that means Brunsli’s hair is really, really soft, like I thought.

I also got a soft and bouncy confirmation from Brunsli’s husband.

Krystl, another Sisterlocked blogger, commented on my blog and she too, says her hair is soft.

Both women have soft hair and said that the feel of one’s hair depends greatly on the texture and the care given to the hair.

So, I could either come out with soft and bouncy hair, or hair that isn’t so soft. It all depends on how I take care of my hair.

Now that I have an idea of what locked hair feels like, I’m like 98.7% sure I want Sisterlocks.

Everyone with blogs chronicle their hair journeys usually start the few weeks before the locks are installed. There will be an 18-month period between my discovery of Sisterlocks and actually getting them installed. This is a permanent hair change and one that I want to ensure that I truly want.

Now for the reason, it will be so long before I actually get Sisterlocks. Well, at the moment I’m in school and I don’t have 3 days to devote to my hair unless I take a break from school and I want to finish school more than I want to do anything with my hair.

(Betty don’t do it!. [I'm watching Ugly Betty and her baby daddy boyfriend asked her to marry him.] Yuck! Betty, go to Italy with Gio, the man who also has deep feelings for you and doesn’t have a baby mama who will make your life miserable! Plus. you have an all expense paid trip, first class plane tickets and five star hotels at risk here!)

Now for reason number two. I currently live with my mother because going to grad school and living in California is undoable otherwise. She specifically said that she will not let me stay with her if I lock my hair because she will not live with a Rasta chick.

I can’t wait to finish school.

Day 141

Thumb Twiddle. Thumb Twiddle. That’s is what I’m going to call that forbidden place for now on. Thumb Twiddle also stands for BORING.

I think I might take a trip to Chicago or New York when I finish school. I’m going to hold off my trip overseas due to Thumb Twiddle but once I rid myself of Thumb Twiddle, the world will be my playground.

The season finale of Dancing with the Stars is about to come on. I can’t wait. My next big tv night is this Thursday. Grey’s Anatomy is going to be so good.

I’m thinking of taking Friday off. I really don’t want to go to work.

I can’t remember what I was going to write about. I finally found the time to read New Yorker magazine I bought back in December

Some of the stories were awful. Then I read Jumpa Lahiri’s short story and I completely loved it. It had all the things a short story should be made of. I love her writing.

Brunsli was kind enough to answer a few questions I had about the feel of Sisterlocks. I was really curious about the feel of Sisterlocks because most of them (especially Brunsli’s Sisterlocks) look really soft.

Well, I have to cut this blog post short. I will continue it tomorrow.

Day 137

I’ve been thinking a lot about my hair again and specifically about Sisterlocks. (I’m watching my mom get her hair done [by the same lady who did my hair right before I went to Afghanistan]). My mom is having fake hair cornrolled into her hair so that there will be enough hair for her weave to be sown to. Also, I’m smelling burnt hair. They have the oven on and heating up the pressing comb. Lovely. Just plain lovely. I so wish by blog had a scratch and sniff feature.)

I asked Brunsli a few questions out of curiosity.

  1. What do Sisterlocks feel like?
  2. Do they feel like yarn or fuzzy braids?
  3. Are they soft and easy to twirl around your finger?
  4. When you sleep on them, do they feel itchy? Or is it like having a built-in soft pillow permanently attached to your head? (I didn’t ask her this question but I should. I like the idea of having a pillow attached to my head. I could go to sleep anywhere.)

I’ve never felt locked hair before. To be honest, I’ve had opportunities but because of the reputation for locks being unclean, I never asked someone if I could feel their hair. Locks, especially traditional locks, look hard. Sisterlocks look hard when they’ve been dyed, which is why I don’t like the look of dyed locks.

(I hate the smell of burnt hair. I think I’m going to puke. Okay so I’m guessing she’s getting her scalp burned by the pressing comb because she’s screaming out in pain. She had a hot flash and sweated out the pressed parts so the hairdresser is repressing those sections. It stinks in here. And it’s smokey.)

I’m really paranoid that I won’t like the way Sisterlocks feel when I twirl a lock around my fingers. I really like having my hands in my hair. I twirl my hair around my fingers when I’m not typing or biting my nails. (When I was little, I mastered the hair twirl and the thumb in my mouth.)

Day 128

My cousin, the one who was more than fine with me chopping off my hair, keeps trying to suggests other ways I could style my hair other than the dreaded Sisterlocks.

She suggested two-strand twists. Not down with that. I haven’t seen one woman that I thought looked nice with twists. Way too juvenile for my taste. Not at all sexy like Krystl or sophisticated like Brunsli. I might as well wear my hair in pony tails like I did when I was a small child.

IMG_2248.JPGShe mentioned how my hair looked when it is curly. It’s an okay look but combine it with some the Santa Ana winds and the dryness of the desert and my hair will look like a brillowy hot mess!!! I don’t even want to go into the amount of hair product I had to use to help me maintain this curly look. When it came time to wash my hair again, my hair felt all slimy and gooey in the shower. I thought I was in one of those old Nickelodeon shows where the kids would always get green goo dumped on their heads, only I was in the shower attempting to wash the goo out.

I’m off to bed.

Day 124

I just wanted to share with you what another opposer to locks wrote to me in an email. This is after directing her to Krystl’s blog.

“It’s pretty, but I don’t think you should do dreads. It’s just too permanent & you have to cut it to change it.

To me, long dreads make the most sense for people who when they cannot grow their hair long any other way. Or, people who have hair that is very difficult to manage when it’s natural.”

It wasn’t that long ago that I posted how I was thinking of chopping off all my hair. This person certainly didn’t see a problem with chopping off my hair in the name of change. Ironic, don’t you think?

Here’s my replay:

My hair is difficult to manage. It frizzes on rainy days because of the humidity and hot days because of sweating, it’s dry and breaks off when I comb it in the winter, and when I wash it, I can barely get a comb through it. I’ve worn my hair in a ponytail for decades.

Besides, cutting my hair short is permanent.

One of these days, I will do a vlog just to show the world what I go through when I wash my hair. I will also take pictures of my hair on hot and humid days. I’m going to have to leave California for that.

Day 119

Joining an Alumni Association. What are the benefits? Is it like joining a sorority or fraternity? I contemplated joining the the UCSB Alumni Association when I graduated from college hundreds of weeks ago, but decided I wanted a minidisc player instead.

Bad investment right? Especially for something that I never used but I saw it as an alternative to cds because I was very protective of my music collection and wanted to preserve it as best I could. HA! Thank you people who don’t want to work for a living!

I was young and stupid. Had I been really into paying more attention to what I was spending my money on, I should have taken that money and purchased some Apple stock. Another missed opportunity. Doh!

I’m much more wiser, so I think. For some reason, I feel like joining the alumni association will benefit me in someway. I don’t know. I’m going to have to check out the website to see if it’s worth my money. I don’t have much spare change as I’m trying to save up for many things, like retirement and a house, and a trip to someplace outside the U.S. though I think my current job will prevent that from happening.

(Note to self: Get a new job.)

I’m trying to put all of my ducks in a row and so far, everything’s lining up quite nice. I just need to finish school without losing my sanity. So far, only one marble got loose.

On the hair front, another objection to Sisterlocks. I don’t even think my cousin knows what I’m talking about. Of course, I didn’t say Sisterlocks. All I said was that I’m thinking of locking my hair and I provided a link to Krystl’s blog. This exchange took place in an email, BTW. Who wouldn’t want to get locks after seeing Krystl’s hair?!

Back to my cousin, well I think she’s thinking, you won’t be able to change your hair for which I haven’t changed my hair in years. My hairdo of choice is ponytail. It has been this way for hundreds of weeks. I don’t like hair in my face and I definitely hate the smell of burnt hair! However, so far, it is better to burn my hair, fry it with chemicals, or pull it out. I could shave it off but my head is shaped funny. (I have a sneaking suspicion my mother or other family, dropped me more than a few times.) Besides having a funny-shaped head, shaved heads on women in California is a sign of butchdom. Is that a word?

I washed my hair last night and I swear there ended up being more hair on the floor and sink than on my head.

In N Out. Danggit. I can’t be anywhere without somebody mentioning those devilishly good burgers! Must. Get. A. Burger. On. My. Way. Home. From. Work. {{singing}} That’s what a hamburger’s, all about.{{singing}}

I gain two pounds everything I eat one of those juicy burgers.

Day 117

I got tagged to tell six unspectacular quirks about myself.

The Rules are as follows:
1. link the person who tagged you?
2. mention the rules in your blog?
3. tell about 6 unspectacular quirks of yours
4. tag 6 following bloggers by linking them
5. leave a comment on each of the tagged blogger?s blogs letting them know they?ve been tagged.
Here are my six things:

1. I bite my nails. I stopped biting my nails when I got of the Army in 2004 and started back up again when I got called back in the Army to do a tour in Afghanistan.

2. I love the smell of soap. The fresher and cleaner the soap smells, the more I like it. Unfortunately, most of the soap sold in stores smell like food. I hate that. People shouldn’t smell like cucumbers, they should smell like soap.

3. I wear glasses. I tried to get contacts but I can’t get them in my eyes so glasses will be the way I see the world until I can muster the courage to get lasik.

4. I’m addicted to chapstick. My dad was my dealer and got me addicted to Carmex. I kicked the Carmex habit and moved to Chapstick. I like the vanilla mint flavor.

5. I hate gold. Gold looks cheap. I prefer silver and platinum.

6. I like being single. I guess when you’ve never been in a satisfying relationship, single feels normal. I don’t think I will ever get married or settle into a relationship.

If anyone would like to try this out, I would highly suggest you do. I’ve actually learned about myself doing this.

About other things on my mind…

I watched a movie called Lovesong starring Monica (the R&B singer) and I thought it sucked. Beauty Shop, with Queen Latifa also sucked. I’m beginning to dislike all movies with predominately black casts. That’s all I’m going to say.

I’m seeing so many black women on tv with natural hair. Now, the fact that there are so many black women on tv with natural hair (afros, wild curls and coils, and locks) my mother must just be stuck in the Madame CJ Walker mentality that we (black women) can only be accepted if our hair is straight. I call b^llsh!t on that. I’m now 98% sure I want Sisterlocks.

I got my Nappylocs Business in a Box. I don’t like the shampoo and moisturizing mist that came with it. They smell like medicine. Remember, I like shampoo to smell clean, fresh soap, not like fricken medicine or food. Well, this stuff smells like medicine. There is no way I would ever put that crap in my hair.

The video that came with it was great. It shows you how to start a loc using your fingers and the Nappylocs tool. The video is well worth it and much easier to understand than the booklet.
